28-Oct-2009 - Triple Gold at NSW State Judo Championships
• Newcastle students of Samurai Judo Academy were the outstanding performers at this years NSW Country-City Judo Championships held in Wellington last weekend, winning triple gold for Newcastle
• Kynan Ward won gold in the under 10years U32kg division, Jayden Sawyer won gold in the under 13yrs U55kg division and Dave Johnson won Gold in the Snr Men’s Open Division
• Kynan Ward also won bronze in the next age group and Jayden won silver in the next weight class, demonstrating their advanced skills and ability
• This performance followed recent Gold Medals by Kynan and Jayden at the NSW PCYC State Championships as well as ‘Player of the Day’ awards in their age groups, which added to the overall NSW Champions Cup going to Samurai Judo Academy for the most medals of any club in NSW
• “This was a remarkable performance by Newcastle PCYC students both individually and as a group” said chief instructor or ‘Sensei’ Ken McKenzie “particularly given the fact that some of our most successful competition players could not make the event”
• It is a case of ‘success breeds success’ when it comes to judo in the Hunter, with many of the players achieving their best ever competition results following the success of their team mates at this years Australian Judo Titles
• The PCYC and Country-City State Championships followed another successful year for Hunter judo players who took Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at the Australian Judo Titles held last month in Canberra
• “I was very proud to watch our students put into practice everything they have been taught to them recently” said sensei McKenzie. “By watching and following in the footsteps of the other State representatives at the Academy, many more students are reap the rewards of experience at the National events”
