12-Aug-2009 - Newcastle Make a Clean Sweep of State Judo Championships

Players from Samurai Judo Academy, based at Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Police and Community Youth Clubs (PCYC), were the outstanding performers at the 2009 PCYC NSW State Championships held in Sydney on the weekend.

Not only did Newcastle win the most medals at the event, winning them the NSW PCYC Club Championship trophy, but Newcastle players made a clean sweep of the "Throw of the Day" trophies in the under 10, under 13 and under 16 yr age categories.

Winners of the throw of the day were Kynan Ward in the Under 10s, Liam Holt in the Under 13s and Jayden Sawyer in the Under 16s.

Jayden won gold medals in his U55kg weight division and in an open division, Liam Holt won gold in the U14kg division and silver in an open division, Kiara Holt won gold in the U36kg division, Caroline Hain won gold in the U48kg division and bronze in an open division, Kenji Sato won gold in the under 16yr U66kg division and Brandon Holt won silver in the U16yrs over 81kg division.

This was a remarkable performance by Newcastle PCYC students both individually and as a group said chief instructor or Sensei Ken McKenzie particularly given the fact that some of our most successful competition players could not make the event.

It is a case of success breeds success when it comes to judo in the Hunter, with many of the players achieving their best ever competition results following the success of their team mates at this years Australian Judo Titles

The PCYC State Championships followed another successful year for Hunter judo players, taking Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at the Australian Judo Titles held last month in Canberra. "I was very proud to watch our students put into practice everything that has been taught to them recently" said sensei McKenzie. By watching and following in the footsteps of the other State representatives at the Academy, many more students are reaping the rewards of experience at the National events.
